An interview with Norman Olegario, frontliner of Cleveland Clinic Florida
By: Dr. Perlita Cerilo, PhD, RN, PNAMSEF Executive Board member.

Meet Norman Olegario, BSN, RN, a PNAMSEF member who works in the Medical Care Unit of the Cleveland Clinic Florida. Norman has been with the hospital for about 2 years. As a new nurse, he is open to the vast experience and critical care skills he could get within this short period of time. Soon after his residency period the whole world was shaken by everyone’s worst nightmare, the COVID 19 epidemic. Yet, Norman is among the critical care nurses who are at the frontlines of the Cleveland Clinic Florida, taking all the necessary precautions in delivering world-class care to patients stricken with COVID-19. I had a pleasure to interview Norman. Being a Cleveland Clinic nurse, he was prepared and equipped to take care of the most critical care patients in the Medical Care Unit. He was inspired to see the strength of physicians and other fellow nurses including himself who are surviving the most catastrophic event in healthcare in our lifetimes. He had seen patients take their last breath without their loved ones at their bedside. As a nurse, he is proud of the experience and lessons learned from this pandemic event. As Norman continues to work in the COVID unit of the hospital, he kept himself isolated from his parents and grandparents who are over 65 years and older by renting a place away from them. Norman is a true hero for his family, the hospital, and the community. He states “with the healthcare community working together, we can best fight the pandemic”.

PNAMSEF Executive Board Distributes Face Shields to Front liners in Miami
By Dr. Perlita Capili Cerilo, PNAMSEF- Public Relations Officer

Indeed, the humbling experience of distributing face shields to our front liners is indescribable. As health care facilities continue to experience the surge in COVID cases, the leadership of hospitals, rehab and nursing home facilities we visited were very thankful and appreciative. The perfect timing of our distribution came in very handy for their nursing staff as the need for face shields has become critical in all health care settings . Amidst busy schedule, the nursing leaders were able to meet us outside their facilities to receive the donated face shields from PNAA. A total of 418 face shields were distributed to Baptist West, Hialeah Hospital, Sunrise Rehab, Nicklaus Children’s Hospital, and Villa Maria Nursing Home. Once again, the PNAMSEF has demonstrated its ongoing efforts of service, collaboration, and increased visibility in the community. Together, we are stronger and truly, we are in this together!

PNAMSEF Volunteering in the Clean-Up Sites in South Florida
Sehnie Talisayon, officers, Board Members, and members of Philippine Nurses Association of Miami and South Florida joined hands with the community organizations, local hospitals, and schools at a Clean-Up Sites project in various public parks and beaches in South Florida. The Clean-Up project also called Baynanza was attended by over 300 people on April 12, 2019. Raising environmental awareness and waste preservation and sanitation, the Miami-Dade Commissioner and Miami Mayor headed the clean-up event by dispatching the volunteers with sunscreen, gloves, and trash bags. The clean-up event lasted about one hour and ended with a local theatre performance. What a great way to spend a Saturday to increase environmental awareness and healthier mentality!

Great job to all PNAMSEF leaders and members who graciously volunteered their time and effort.

PNAMSEF Jamaica Volunteer: Compassionate Franciscan Sisters of Poor Medical and Dental Mission with Bernardina Hussein (PNAMSEF Treasurer)

Article by: Perlita Capili Cerilo, PhD, MSHA, RN, PNAMSEF Public Relations Officer
A 2-day medical mission and a 3-day dental mission were held March 7-8, 2019 and March 7-9 respectively in Jamaica. Both missions were spearheaded by Sister Margaret of the Compassionate Franciscan Sisters of the Poor and Bernardina Hussein, APRN, RN, currently the PNAMSEF Treasurer, together with volunteer doctors, dentists, and dental hygienists. The medical team saw 100 patients on March 7th and 60 patients on March 8th. Besides medical treatment, Sister Myrna, Miss Tate (the convent cook), and Dina Hussein delivered food, clothes, and sweet treats to the residents. The highlights of the medical mission consisted of a healing mass performed in the evening of March 7th by Father Claudio and the distribution of packed meals, salt, water, and juices blessed by the priest in Redding heights neighborhood. The appreciation and gratefulness of the residents were unsurmountable.

The dental clinic was held from March 7th to the 9th with 3 dentists and 4 dental hygienists who saw around 100 patients per day. Their work consisted of dental cleaning on children and students and dental extractions on adults/elderly. The last day of dental mission was extended from 9am to 7pm. The medical and dental mission culminated with a healing mass by Father Claudio in the convent on March 10th. In addition, more cooked food, clothing, and sweet treats were delivered to the nursing home by the sisters and Ms. Hussein. The medical and dental mission left Jamaica with feeling of accomplishment and fulfillment of their mission to give back to the underserved communities.
